The debate about socio-education, in this article, establishes as a starting point the relationship between racism, youth, and deprivation of freedom in the life experiences and literacy of young black people deprived of liberty in Brazil. Based on these interpretative keys, we seek to understand the literacy practices of young black people deprived of liberty with the theoretical contribution of studies on ethnic-racial relations and new literacy studies. The central argument of the article is that the texts written by young people who are serving socio-educational measures in closed regime (internment) show tensions between the punitive discourse that permeates their experiences in the socio-educational system and, on the other hand, the use of writing as a strategy of resistance to the violence they suffer inside and outside the system.
