ETHICS IN RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

In studies involving human beings, animals, or genetic manipulation, authors must inform in the Material and Methods section the ethical aspects of the research with approval by the Institutional Research Ethics Committee. Works without approval from an Ethics Committee will not be accepted for publication.

PUBLICATION ETHICS STATEMENT

The editors of this journal apply a rigorous peer review process, together with strict policies and ethical standards to ensure the inclusion of high-quality scientific works in the field of academic publishing. Unfortunately, cases of plagiarism, data falsification, image manipulation, inappropriate authorship credit and similar issues arise.

EDITORS AND EDITORIAL TEAM AS AUTHORS

The Editorial Board or the Scientific Committee must not be involved in the processing of their own academic work. Submissions authored by members of the Editorial Board or the Scientific Committee will be assigned to at least two independent external reviewers. Decisions will be made by other members of the Editorial Board who have no conflict of interest with the author.

PEER REVIEW OF MANUSCRIPTS

All manuscripts submitted to the journal will be evaluated by two reviewers from the Scientific Committee or invited external reviewers, whose names will be kept confidential. In case of discrepancy between evaluations, a third reviewer will be consulted. The Editorial Board of the journal, based on this information, will make the final decision. When modifications are suggested, these will be forwarded to the corresponding author for response and, subsequently, forwarded to the reviewers to verify compliance with the requirements and requests.

The instructions must be fully followed. The final acceptance of the manuscript is the responsibility of the Editorial Board, and articles that are not in accordance with the instructions will be promptly rejected. Omitted cases will be decided by the Editorial Board of the journal Boletim Científico Agronômico do CCAAB/UFRB.

EDITORIAL PROCEDURES AND PEER REVIEW

PRE-CHECK

Immediately after submission, the Editor-in-Chief of the journal will carry out a technical pre-check to evaluate:

  • General adequacy of the manuscript to the journal;
    • Adherence of the manuscript to high-quality research and ethical standards;
    • Standards of rigor to qualify for a more in-depth review.

The Editor-in-Chief or a member of the Editorial Board in case of conflict of interest will be notified of the submission and invited to perform an editorial pre-check. During the editorial pre-check phase, the editor will evaluate the adequacy of the submission in relation to the scope of the journal, as well as the overall scientific soundness of the manuscript, including the relevance of the references and the correctness of what is applied in the methodology. Editors may decide to reject the manuscript, request revisions before peer review, or continue with the peer review process and recommend appropriate reviewers.

PEER REVIEW

After a manuscript passes the initial checks, it will be forwarded to at least two independent specialists for peer review. A double-blind review is applied, where the identities of the authors are not known to the reviewers. Peer review comments are sent to the authors without identification of the reviewers’ names.

EDITORIAL DECISION AND REVIEW

All articles, reviews and technical notes published in the journal Boletim Científico Agronômico do CCAAB/UFRB undergo the peer review process and receive at least two reviews. The Editor-in-Chief will communicate the reviewers’ decision, which will be one of the following:

  • Accept after minor revisions: The article is, in principle, accepted after revision based on the reviewer’s comments. Authors have five days for minor revisions.
    • Reconsider after major revisions: Acceptance of the manuscript will depend on the revisions. The author must provide a point-by-point response or provide a rebuttal if some reviewer comments cannot be revised. A maximum of two rounds of major revision per manuscript is normally provided. Authors will be asked to resubmit the revised article within an appropriate time, and the revised version will be returned to the reviewer for additional comments.
    • Reject and Encourage Resubmission: If additional experiments are necessary to support the conclusions, the manuscript will be rejected and authors will be encouraged to resubmit the article once new experiments have been conducted.
    • Reject: The article has serious flaws and/or does not provide any significant original contribution. No resubmission option is provided.

All reviewer comments must be answered point by point. When authors disagree with a reviewer, they must provide a clear response.

AUTHOR APPEALS

Authors may appeal a rejection by sending an email to the journal’s Editorial Board. The appeal must provide a detailed justification, including point-by-point responses to the reviewers’ and/or editors’ comments. Appeals may only be submitted following a decision of “reject and decline resubmission” and must be submitted within three months from the date of the decision. Failure to comply with these criteria will result in the appeal not being considered. The Editor-in-Chief will forward the manuscript and related information (including reviewer identities) to a designated member of the Editorial Board. The consulted editor will be asked to provide an advisory recommendation on the manuscript and may recommend acceptance, peer review, or maintaining the original rejection decision. This decision will then be validated by the Editor-in-Chief. A rejection decision at this stage is final and cannot be reversed.

PRODUCTION AND PUBLICATION

Once accepted, the manuscript will undergo professional review, English editing, author review, final corrections, layout, and publication on the website of the journal Boletim Científico Agronômico do CCAAB/UFRB.
