CONSTRUÇÕES COM VERBOS LEVES NO PB E EM OUTRAS LÍNGUAS NATURAIS:
PONTOS DE CONVERGÊNCIAS E DISSONÂNCIAS
Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the formation of constructions with light verbs in different natural languages, considering, among other aspects, the capacity for argument selection and the assignment of thematic roles, as well as the combinatorial constraints imposed by their constituent elements. We first understand the points that bring these sentences together and separate them in various languages and, subsequently, verify what happens in this type of sentence with the verbs dar (give) and fazer (make) in Brazilian Portuguese. To this end, we revisited studies, mainly generative (Grimshaw; Mester, 1988; Samek-Lodovici, 2003; Scher, 2004; Duarte et al., 2010, etc.) that address this topic, and analyzed written data that comprise the corpus constructed by Alves (2022). The results revealed that the name of these constructions, with which the light verb is associated, is the main nuclear element, responsible for the semantic and syntactic selection of the external and innermost arguments, the PP. The light verb, on the other hand, plays a fundamental role in projecting the position to be occupied by the external argument, as the nominal element lacks this capacity (Alexiadou, 2001). This, in fact, was the main point of dissonance between the studies investigated and the proposed approach. Furthermore, the restrictions on the combination of verb and noun occur due to the set of features that define these two elements. This study is justified as it seeks to spark reflections on the predicational properties of the constituent items of these sentences.
