Abstract

A product of poets' transformations and reactions to the emotions underlying Romanticism, realism found unique forms of expression in France, Brazil, and Italy. In Italy, under the influence of Émile Zola's French Naturalism, realism developed with unique regional centers under the mastery of authors such as Federico De Roberto, Luigi Capuana, and Giuseppe Verga. With the latter, in southern Italy, and particularly in Sicily, Verism marked Italian literature and gave voice to the vanquished, those forgotten by society and left aside during the development of both politics and economics following the Italian Risorgimento. In I Malavoglia, Verga's magnum opus, these nuclei gain dramatic significance by being positioned as events outside of time, that is, exposed to natural transformations and, like them, arising from an undated sequence and only felt through the perception of a relentless passage of time that did not spare them from the decay and misery of events. Thus, this work aims to demonstrate how Verga constructed his distinctive writing and how it manifests itself in his main novel.
