THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ACTIVIST POINT OF VIEW IN THE HATE U GIVE BY ANGIE THOMAS

This paper presents an analysis of the point of view in The Hate U Give (2017), a novel by Angie Thomas. That point of view is a construction primarily shaped by the narrator, Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old teenager who witnesses the murder of her best friend by a police officer. Our discussion begins on the issue of race in contemporary English-language literature, departing from texts by Bonnici (2011), Festino (2014), and Morrison (2020), as well as on the protest novel genre in American literature based on the works by Drake (2011) and Baldwin (2011). Next, we briefly explore the construction of the point of view in fiction following the discussion presented by Leite (1997), Arrigucci Jr. (1998) and Gancho (2004). Finally, we present our reading of this construction in the novel. Our conclusion is that the novel builds an activist perspective through the witness-narrator as a result of a learning process about the complexity of racial oppression in the United States – a system that operates through stereotypes, stigmas and values to normalize the extermination of Black people.
