ELZA SOARES ENCONTRA BILLIE HOLIDAY:
UMA TRADUÇÃO PERFORMÁTICA
Abstract
This article brings together Billie Holiday and Elza Soares based on the notion of performance translation defended by Ramos and Solidade (2020), which conceives the performance scene as a translation mechanism. It is possible to affirm that through individual signatures (performer-translator), Billie Holiday and Elza Soares translate the experience of black women through a self-inscription arising from experience, which simultaneously gains unique contours and disseminates other possibilities of being for black female bodies. In view of this aim, a brief biography of the performers is presented, against the backdrop of two Afro-diasporic rhythms – blues and samba. Based on the analysis of the performance of the songs Fine and mellow, My man, Maria da Vila Matilde and Pra fuder, the article analyzes performance translations by Billie Holiday and Elza Soares based on the predominance of the affects of joy and sadness.
