From Economic Reconstruction to the Emergence of the Democratic Regime in Mozambique

A Reflection on the Consolidation of Civil Society, 1975 - 2017

Abstract

In this article we analyze how the economic reforms and the emancipation of civil society evolved, as well as the relation of these elements with the democratic process under construction. The article also sought to analyze the level of civil society participation in Mozambique's political processes and in social economic development in the post-colonial period. The article shows that the transition from the single party to the multiparty system and the ensuing emancipation of civil society was accompanied by the economic reforms begun in the 1980. In it two phases of evolution and emergence of civil society in Mozambique are identified, the first of which was marked due to the strong presence of the rulers who sought to control its participation in the political and socio-economic spheres, and the second one in which the democratic political reforms that are undertaken try to exclude its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country, favoring the party associativism and, in a way, blackmailing and intimidating its social actors.
