Abstract

The article examines the lecture series Truth and Juridical Forms, delivered by Michel Foucault in 1973 in Brazil, as a delimiting point for the formulation of a “political history of truth.” To this end, it mobilizes the problem of truth, power, and juridical truth practices in Foucault, according to the following path: i) a brief reassessment of Foucault’s research immediately prior to the Truth and Juridical Forms lectures, with emphasis on his particular reading of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and the strategic use of Nietzschean philosophy in opposition to the Aristotelian apophantic model of truth; ii) the elaboration of the theme of an “external history” of truth in the first of the 1973 lectures—a history centered on social practices and power relations that produce regimes of veridiction and modes of subjectivity; iii) the role of Nietzschean philosophy as a critical model for a historical analysis of the politics of truth, in contrast to the modern tradition of metaphysics and epistemology of truth.
