Abstract

EDITOR'S NOTE
This special issue of Magistra was edited in partnership with the organizers of the Rede de
Vegetal Genetic Resources of the Northeast (RGV Nordeste), carried out at the Federal University of
Recôncavo da Bahia - UFRB in November 2013. This special issue includes the lectures and
the expanded abstracts presented during the event, and aims to disseminate the results of
works that bring important contributions to the development of the area of Genetic Resources
Vegetables, especially in Northeast Brazil.

The Northeast Plant Genetic Resources Network originates from the Genetic Resources Network
Vegetais da Bahia (RGV Bahia), established in 2005 from the initiative of professors and researchers
of the State of Bahia, under the leadership of Professor Roberto Lisboa Romão from the State University of Feira
de Santana (UEFS). On that occasion, the I Workshop on Plant Genetic Resources of the
Bahia, held at the Eduardo Magalhães Foundation, in Salvador (BA). Subsequently, were carried out
three other events by RGV Bahia, in 2006 in Ilhéus, at the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC),
in 2008 in Vitoria da Conquista, at the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB), and in 2011 in
Juazeiro, at the State University of Bahia (UNEB-Juazeiro). In the latter (IV RGV Bahia), the groups of
work deepened the analysis of the situation of RGV Bahia and how it should be strengthened to
meet future demands. It was recommended, therefore, the expansion of the Network's action to the Northeast
Brasileiro, which was approved at the General Meeting held on December 2, 2011, becoming
to be designated the Northeast Vegetal Genetic Resources Network (RGV Nordeste).
RGV Nordeste, together with the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB) and the
Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura, held the first meeting in the city of Cruz das Almas, on the campus of
UFRB, from November 5 to 8, 2013. The theme, “Conserving for the Future”, was chosen for
enable the deepening of discussions on the importance and mechanisms for conservation and
use of plant genetic resources occurring in the biomes of Northeast Brazil.
The I RGV Nordeste had the participation of researchers, professors, undergraduate students and
graduate students, producers and extension workers who work for the conservation and use of
plant genetics in Brazilian and foreign teaching and research institutions. were presented
lectures and round tables by renowned experts who posed challenges to scientific institutions and
academic institutions, the private sector and development agents. In addition to the technical-scientific activities, it was
The event “RGV na Praça” was held, with the participation of students from the Postgraduate Program in
Plant Genetic Resources of UFRB/Embrapa, aiming to publicize and sensitize the community to the
importance of participatory conservation of genetic resources in urban environments.
